Hotel Residencial Salema, Western Algarve

If you need somewhere with a few more "creature comforts" then this is the place. A no-frills, but spotlessly clean Portuguese-run hotel, which features in Rick Steve's Guides (people from the USA will know of this book even if they don't know who David Beckham is!)

The Hotel Bar, run by an expert fisherman, Valentim, is a hub for the whole village. Locals pop in and out of the place just to say hello or keep up with the gossip.

The hotel is open from Easter until early November. Each room has a balcony facing out onto the Atlantic - just a few yards away.
